Find the Truth
True or false questions can stump the most successful students because they often find themselves second-guessing their first instinct. There are hints and tips to help get through these sections on tests, however.
• The most important thing to remember for true or false tests is the entire statement must be true for the answer to be true. If there is one word that makes the statement false or even partially false, then the answer has to be false.
• Underline keywords and phrases in true or false statements to help you look for parts of the statement that may be false. Some examples of important keywords include names, dates, numbers, places, and titles.
• Be aware that absolute words such as “always,” “none,” “only,” and “never” may render the statement false because there are often exceptions to the rule.
• You should also be aware of the qualifying words such as “some,” “usually,” “often,” “may,” “many,” and “can” that often render an otherwise false statement true because it leaves room for exceptions.
• Look for a word or an omission of a word that makes the statement false.
• Correct the false statements if you have time, to remind you of why you marked it false in the first place. This is a great way to show the professor why you marked the statement as you did in case there is a question of validity of the answer.
• Know in the instances where you have to guess, you should put “true,” because professors will often make more true statements than false statements.
